I dedicate this day to all my poker scholars!

Today is the anniversary of the annual World Series of Poker in which the AMETEUR Chris Moneymaker won the tournament and a WSOP record payout of $2.5 million.

He turned his initial buy-in tourney of just $40 into that victory.

He had never played in a live tournament because he had played only on the internet.

"If I can win it, anybody can," Chris said.

I had a similar unlikely experience in my very first online Multiple Table Tournament online, although not as glamorous Cool . It was at Royal Vegas. As a new player, I was granted $10 and a free entry into one of their ($2000 or $2500?) freerolls for a taste of real money action while foregoing the raked hands, which was the most generous deal I'd ever seen. I remember joining the tourney thinking everyone was just waiting for me and it would start immediately after I clicked lol. Not so soon after, I saw the clock counting down and the number of entries steadily rising towards 1000. I had clammy palms when the pressure cooker finally started and before I knew it, half my stack was gone, and I hadn't even seen my first flop. I watched the mayhem in disbelief wondering how these maniacs could be so careless with such a precious opportunity. I think I folded pocket 10's and Q's after being raised preflop before I fought back. Then I went on tilt .....for two hours. After a few miracles, 2 confusing five minute breaks, 5 or 6 coin flips with crazy highs and scary lows, I was in the money..$1.80, which made me tighten up my game again. It was like a dream as the prize money kept increasing and I hung on for dear life. Before I knew it, I was sitting at the last table. But by this time I was cocky even though severly short stacked. I had surpassed all my expectations and was already assured a hefty $25 prize. But I was in the hot seat. I could do no wrong and won hand after hand and was almost embarrassed at my good fortune. Then it got down to two of us..heads up, and I owned 99% of the chips. I proudly called for my wife to come quick and witness the death blow. In my mind it was over. I blindly bet/called every hand, knowing that my opponent would have to double up many times to get back on the radar. Just one more winning hand and it was all over, any second now. Unbelievably, while my wife and I watched on, my opponent did not lose another hand and made the most unlikely of comebacks to win the tournament. As I questioned the laws of probability and my wife questioned the fairness of the game, they typed me a message in the chat box that proclaimed their greatness and how it was never in doubt etc. I had somehow snatched defeat from the jaws of victory. I still won over $270; not bad... but the prize wasn't worth near as much the lesson I learned.

This is a true story and exactly as I remember it. Trust me, I won't ever forget it.

I'm either taking too long to compose my posts, or my log-in expires too quickly which leads to "guesting", a condition of which I have repeatedly displayed the chacteristics.
