DEFINING BAD BEATS
DEFINING “BAD BEATS”
A bad beat occurs when a poker hand that is statistically likely to lose becomes a winning
hand after more cards are dealt. To take a bad beat means to be on the losing end;
to lay a bad beat means you were the donk that got your money in when you should
have folded, and then pulled a miracle out of your ass.
The term bad beat is often used when all the chips have gone into the pot because the
losing player had odds. Most of the time it refers to a hand that should not have been
played to begin with, that caught a phenomenally unlikely draw on the river.
This is more common in low limit games because, since it doesn’t cost them much to
see the river, many players have that ever-annoying any two cards can win mindset.
A lot of low-limit players will play aces and rags (“any ace!"), and some will play any
two suited cards, regardless of rank. Players referred to as calling stations
will get in the pot with marginal or beyond-weak hands, and then call all the
way to the river in hopes of making their ridiculous draw.
It’s worth noting that the term “bad beat” tends to be overused.
A lot of times we hear people bitching and moaning about one,
when in fact the hand in question was not a bad beat at all.
The reason for this is that novices often confuse a bad call with a call that will probably lose, but still has the pot odds on its side. They will then make a big scene and cry, when in fact they were only slightly unlucky.
A bad beat is in fact, when someone makes an incorrect move against you, and then gets exceptionally lucky.

I can say I've seen and been in a "true" down right terrible bad beat........
With a pair of Aces that I held,
Ace, 2, King, 5, 2 on the table......
I bet small, 1 raised, I called, someone else raised, well before you knew it, we were all in- $19-each for a pot of $104- with those that folded (real money, not no freeroll) and we laid-
4 Players in had:
Kings, over 2's-
Aces, over 2's-
4 of a kind 2's
ALL lost to A,2,3,4,5 Straight Flush!
He stayed with 4 to a straight, until that 5 caught a straight, but then the river card flushed him!! WOW!! |

this helps me to remember that not every pair is worth calling an all in with...that is how I usually get in trouble! I mean a pair of 2s loses to AK everyday |

That is a Brutal Beat x 3. Especially so, for the poor soul that rivered
a damn flock of ducks !!!
At the flop you were 71% to win, 3s 4s at 19%, KK at 5%, 22 at 5%
At the turn, 5s, you were 10%, KK now 3%, 22 now drawing dead at 0%
and 3s 4s is 88% favorite !!! The river was almost a formality. You did have 4 outs and KK just the case K, to win. The 2s changed nothing, but turned this into one of the sickest hands I've ever seen !!! Unreal !!! |

I have not been in a bad beat persay but, I have seen many players who will be in a hand and get sucked out with that bad beat. I don't pay attention to odds or anything like. I just enjoy playing the game and hoping and praying to win. LOL |
