Annie Duke: Professional Poker Player
Annie Duke is one of the most famous names in the tournament circuit. She has accumulated many nicknames in her long, stellar poker career. Among them are "Annie Legend," "The Duke," and "The Duchess of Poker."
Born and raised in Concord, New Hampshire, Annie Duke grew up in a family that had cards and competition in the blood. In a home where card playing was the glue that held the family together, everybody not only wanted to win but needed to win.
Early in her childhood, Duke struggled to fit in as a liberal product of two teachers in a sea of conservatism and privilege on the grounds of the prestigious St. Paul’s prep school. Never feeling like she quite fit in, at the age of 18, Duke matriculated at Columbia University and thought to try her luck in the big city.
Pretty, smart and popular, Duke completed a major in English and Psychology at Columbia University intending to follow in the footsteps of her parents and becoming a teacher. Instead, she enrolled as a graduate student at the University of Pennsylvania for Cognitive Psychology.
In 1991, while Duke was knee deep in doctorate research, she proposed marriage to an old friend, Ben Duke, packed up her life and research and left academia behind for Billings, CO. Living in romantic poverty with her husband, Duke began to play poker in local pokers rooms to pay the mortgage on their first home.
In 1994, at the suggestion of her brother, famed poker player Howard Lederer, Duke tried her hand at the World Series of Poker in Las Vegas. She ended up placing 13th in her first tournament, knocking her brother out of play. After winning 70K in her first month of competition, Duke and her husband made the move to Las Vegas so she could pursue poker professionally.
Over the course of the next decade, Duke established herself as one of the best poker players in the world. In 2004, Duke beat out an assembly of 234 players in the WSOP $2000 buy-in Omaha Hi/Lo Split and won her first WSOP bracelet. In August of the same year, Duke knocked out 8 of the worlds’ greatest poker legends and won $2 million in the No-Limit Texas Hold’em winner-take-all, invitation-only WSOP Tournament of Champions, established by ESPN and Harrah’s Entertainment.
Duke now serves as a consultant for the online poker site UltimateBet.com to ensure that their rules of poker and tournament structure match those you would find in the famous poker rooms of the Las Vegas strip. Furthermore, she is sought after for her vast poker skills and knowledge, coaching the likes of Ben Affleck and Matt Damon on their poker game.
In September 2005, Duke’s long awaited autobiography hit the shelves “Annie Duke: How I raised, folded, bluffed, flirted, cursed and won millions at the World Series of Poker”. Written in conjunction with David Diamond, the autobiography highlights the obstacles in Annie’s personal life, with her path to achieve her first WSOP bracelet. Duke has released a series of DVD’s, which include “Annie Duke’s Advanced Texas Hold’em Secrets: How to Beat the Big Boys” in October 2005, “Annie Duke’s Beginner’s Guide To Texas Hold ‘em” and “Annie Duke’s Girl’s Guide To Texas Hold ‘em” both released in January 2006, and the February 2006 release of “Masters of Poker: Annie Duke’s Conquering Online Poker”. Duke has also filmed a pilot called “Annie Duke Takes on the World” which premieres May 1 on GSN. Her production company Ten Dimes Productions, which she started with Joe Reitman, is currently developing a horror film script.
Annie recently appeared on NBC’s hit show Celebrity Apprentice.
Duke currently resides in Los Angeles with her four children, Maud, Leo, Lucy and Nelly. |

Captain Tom Franklin
Name: Tom Franklin
Birthday: October 23, 1950
Location: Gulfport, Mississippi
Online Screen Names -

Website
Born in Fresno, California in 1950 Captain Tom Franklin is one of the true veterans of the game. Franklin began playing poker in 1970 and is no less ambitious now than he was then. His goal is still to win three majors within the space of a calendar years and, judging by his determination and dedication thus far, he probably won’t give up until he has achieved that.
A happily married man with five children, Tom Franklin is dedicated to his family, although nothing takes hold of him as poker does. It is the only way of life that he knows. He began by playing in the smaller casinos in California but soon moved up to the bigger casinos. He started playing professionally as soon as he could afford to and has not looked back since. His earnings exceed $2 million to date and he shows no sign of slowing up!
Captain Tom had to wait twenty years for his first finish in the money in the World Series of Poker. That eventually came as he placed 26th in the $10,000 No Limit Texas Hold’Em Championship event. He used that cash as a spur and soon moved on to bigger and better results. He came 7th in the 1995 $10,000 No Limit Hold ‘Em World Championship. However, he didn’t peak until 1999.
During 1999, Franklin placed in two World Series of Poker tournaments. He came 4th in the Las Vegas WSOP $3,000 Limit Hold’Em after winning the $2,500 Omaha Limit two days previously. May must have been a good month because that win gave him his first WSOP bracelet.
Franklin has placed in several tournaments and events since, but none as big as his win in the No Limit Hold’Em event at the Bellagio Five Diamond Classic in 2005. He picked up almost $500,000 for that win and shows no sign of slowing down just yet. He still has the hunger and passion for poker than men half his age lack, so why retire when you’re on a good thing?

Name: Daniel Negreanu
Nickname: Kid Poker
Birth Date: July 26, 1974
Birth Place: Toronto, Canada
Current Residence: Las Vegas, Nevada with his wife Lori
Poker Room: PokerStars
His career took an upward turn in 1997 when he won two substantial events at the World Poker Finals at Foxwoods, which earned him $55,064 and made him the tournament’s best all-around player. Negreanu followed this triumph by winning $169,460 at the $2,000 Pot Limit Hold’em event in the 1998 World Series of Poker making him the youngest WSOP bracelet winner in history, a title he held till 2004. This was only the start to a lot of success at the WSOP, which is still going on today. In 1999, he won the United States Poker Championship.
This is when Daniel gave in to some vices; excessive drinking, mismanaging money and too much time alone affected his game. Making some needed lifestyle changes, in 2001 he made the money in tournaments and finished 11th in the WSOP Main Event. After a 2nd place finish in the $5,000 Omaha Hi/Lo event in 2002, he returned the following year to claim his 2nd bracelet in the $2,000 S.H.O.E. event. In September, he won the Borgata Poker Open for an incredible $1,117,400 and followed it up just three months later with victory at the Five Diamond World Poker Classic, a win that earned Daniel another $1,770,218. Since then, there have also been several other WPT final table appearances, raking another $1,443,013 to his account.
Negreanu then followed to become one of the most successful poker tournament players. This involved winning two World Poker Tour events, another three WSOP bracelets, and appearing at 12 final tables.
As of 2008, his total live tournament winnings exceed $11,200,000, second on the all time money list behind Jamie Gold, and also first among players who have not won the WSOP Main Event and leading money winner on the WPT circuit |

Just because he was the first ever World Series of Poker $1,000,000 prize
is why I chose him. I have a lot of favorites
Brad Daugherty (born July 5, 1951 in Mountain Grove, Missouri) is a professional poker player.
Daugherty began playing poker in 1969 on a high school trip. Following high school he worked in the construction industry, but after hearing of large prize money for tournament winnings, in 1978 he moved to Reno, Nevada. In 1987 he won his first tournament.
Daugherty was awarded the first ever World Series of Poker $1,000,000 prize when he won the bracelet in the main event at the 1991 World Series of Poker. He made another deep run in the WSOP main event in 1993, finishing in 9th place.
Daugherty is the coauthor, with Tom McEvoy, of Championship Satellite Strategy and No-Limit Texas Hold'em for New Players.
Although Daugherty no longer travels much to play poker, he still plays at the larger tournaments as well as online. He has one son and currently resides in the Philippines.
As of 2009, his total live tournament winnings exceed $1,700,000.[1] His 19 cashes as the WSOP account for $1,158,574 of those winnings |

Oh for sure and wihout a doubt it has to be Daniel Negreanu
Daniel Negreanu is one of the most recognizable poker players in the world today. Most of his popularity comes from his natural affability at the poker table.
But the player known as "Kid Poker" is as respected as anyone when it comes to the poker wars. Standing 2nd on the World Poker Tour's all-time money list, Negreanu has put together a run over the past eight years that few can match.
Daniel Negreanu was born in Toronto in 1975. As a teen, he became a pool hustler. Eventually, Daniel decided that poker was far more challenging than pool, because it's harder to read a person than to read the grain of a billiard's table, so Daniel began to master cards.
Daniel developed his uncanny post-flop talents early, and it's well-known that he can read his opponent's relative strength or weakness with an amazing degree of accuracy. Daniel dropped out of high school to pursue his new ambition, eventually leaving Toronto for Las Vegas at the age of 21. He captured his first World Series of Poker bracelet in the $2000 pot-limit hold'em event, and at the young age of 23, he was the youngest player to win a WSOP event. The poker world took notice, and no one has been able to take their eyes off him since.
Today, Daniel is one of the very best poker players in the game " and in the history of the game. With over $12 million in tournament winnings, he has a list of accomplishments that is no less than impressive. He has three WSOP bracelets and nearly two dozen cashes, along with two World Poker Tour titles and twelve other cashes. His two WPT wins came in 2004, which he admits was his best year ever in poker. He won the Borgata Poker Open, then the Five Diamond World Poker Classic that year, which propelled him to the top of the WPT leader board where he captured that year's title of WPT Player of the Year. He plays in the highest stakes cash games in Las Vegas " the Big Game in which the limits are $4000-$8000 and the games are mixed. He has also authored several books and become involved in numerous sponsorship deals for video games, instructional videos, and online gaming endeavors.
Daniel also tutors poker players online, inclduing celebrity clients like Tobey McGuire. He is also a regular and sometimes controversial writer for CardPlayer magazine. |

Ok...I just picked one of these guys from the stats so I hope thats ok...I HAD to pick him because his name is Rhett Butler! And, I like to root for the underdog...
In 25 years of playing, his first finish in the money was a 5th place in WSOP in 2006. He now has more than 3.3 mil in tournament wins, but most of it came from that 5th place.
He lives in Rockville, MD with his wife and 3 children and works as insurance agent. I just hope this guy wins another big one this year so I can see his name all over the place!
PS I also like Daniel Negreanu - mostly because whenever I see him on TV playing he seems to be in a good mood...I can't stand those players that pitch a fit...I mean, come on, now! You guys are playing a game that you love and making a living at it too! |
