CAPTAINS CHOICE:
POKER KNOWLEDGE CONTEST FOR DECEMBER!

WIN $30 Cash by Random Drawing + PC-Points!!
Contest ends by January 3rd, 2010. Post to enter-

There are so many variables to consider when you look at a starting hand in hold ‘em.

Let's take a look at POCKET 10's

• What are the blinds and antes?
• What is your chip stack?
• Are you familiar with each player? How have they been playing the last two levels?
• What position are you in for the hand in comparison to the button and blinds?
• What action has happened before you look at your cards?
• What is the chip stack of any player who has acted before you, as well as those still to act?
• Where are you in the tournament?

ON EVERY HAND YOU HAVE TO CONSIDER THESE SAME QUESTIONS, ALONG WITH THEIR ANSWERS.

So, with POCKET 10's as a starting point.................
Let's look at two combinations of action and position:
• Middle position with an early raise in front of me.
• On the button, and there is an under-the-gun raise and call in front of me.

Pocket 10s can be dicey, especially if you’ve been card dead for a couple of levels. Any pair looks great when you’ve been dealt K-5o on 11 consecutive hands!
But, "CAN" you keep your discipline and wits about you every single time??

Middle position/raise in front of me:
On a short stack, I’m pushing here unless I’m up against a very tight player.
"OR"
With a deep stack, I’m re-raising here but again ready to get away from the hand if I feel I need to.

On the button/raise and a call in front of me:
I may muck here late in a tourney, even on a short stack. You have an early raiser and a caller, pretty strong action if you are short. You aren’t pushing anyone out of a pot, and you may be way behind with your 10s.
"OR"
Deep in a tourney, I probably fold 10s with this action if I’m deep-stacked. When I’m playing good deep in a tournament, I may muck 10s with no action in middle position. What are you going to do if you’re called with 10s? A very dangerous spot late in position.

PLEASE POST HERE CRUSHERS- Any questions or concerns- AND ANSWERING WHAT DO YOU THINK YOU WOULD DO? Smile

i would go with my gut instinct... and sadly for me im normally wrong but depending on circumstances i would probably play the hand...especially if ive been getting rotten cards id be at the stage that i feel the cards arent getting better so time to play rather than waiting for a great hand and losing chips on the blinds so shortening my stack without playing

It all depends what is on the table. It is possible to draw 3 of a kind or a full house off of my pair. Even depending on what cards are on the turn a straight. I would play the hand till I felt the odds were definately against me. I would not play the pair to the river if there were a strong chance of someone already having 2 pair, straight, flush etc...

Folding a bad hand is easy anyone can do that ( which I would absolutely do with the examples given) but folding a good hand is the example of the skillfull art of playing poker.

Thats my story and I'm sticking to it.

I would definitely take alot of the questions in consideration. Definitely knowing how the players at your table has been playing will help, and depending on both stacks of the players and my own stack, the raiser and the caller, if the raiser is shortstacked i would assume that he is about to be hit with the blind and he picked up anything with some paint or a small wired pair, the caller after him may have a strong hand but with just a call, and its around me, if my stack is decent, i would make the call here and look to flop a set, if any over cards to my pair of 10's i am cautious and any bet i would fold if their is an overcard on the board.

if the raiser has a decent stack, you can assume if he leads out on the button, you should assume he must have a strong hand, at worst a big Ace like AK or AQ, but at best, possibly has a big pair bigger than mine.

If my stack is big, and calling his raise anticipating an allin fromt hat player, and it will hardly affect my stack, i may reraise to try and isoolate me and that player, and be prepared to an allin which i would have o call. This is only if i have a big stack, and an allin call, won't hurt too much if i lose.

If my stack is average or or may cost me more than 25% of my stack if i lose, and the raiser has a close stack to mine, i may definitely have to consider folding here.

Worst thing is to jeopardize making it to the money after playing for a couple hours of play and getting around the bubble mark.

So really, the 3 important things to think about is what is the size of my stack vs his,

is he really short stacked, and possibly pushing with what he thinks is the better hand now or the one he is about to get in the blind and be obligated to push with that because of being shortstacked.

and lastly, does the raiser have a good stack and quite a few more blinds left, if so, under the gun raise, usually says Monster hand, and you should definitely think about getting away from the 1010, especially if there is a caller after the raiser before you.

Ok, hope any of that made since, but thats what i'd look at and do.

Thanks dear, sometimes play great poker, usually when i am thinking of all that you need to when playing, then when you don't pay attention, to all of the questions, you are sure not to play as well as you could be.

Also, thanks for the extra points.

depending on my stack will determine how i will play pocket 10s pre-flop.
short stack - call any blind or any raise in hopes others will also contribute to the pot and hoping for a favourable flop
mid stack - may consider same play if i were short stacked but if the blind is a significant amount i may try and win the blinds by going all-in
large stack or chipleader - a small raise enough to filter out the limpers and get a read on those who call. After the flop if no ten comes I will throw out another small raise to get a read again, if it does come i will check and hope for a check-raise opportunity.

10s are my worst hand....never seem to win with them, so I would fold them unless deep stacked, then i might call if the price is right to see if i get lucky and flop trips

I think I would fold. It sems like there are a lot of questions that I would want the answers to. I doubt that I could remember all those questions when I am at the table, much less figure out what the answers are.

I am pretty inexperienced but by reading the information here I am learning. Poker is a lot more complicated than I had previously thought. Thank you all for the info.
