[quote="valeria" Kids, grandkids whatever you may have is one thing.. but a pet is different and share another whole level on their own in your heart.[/quote]

Dear Valeria, those words in your entry really grabbed me! How right you are......and it is a very high level, indeed!

If only more people would be as good to dogs as they are to us!

I don't believe I have ever had a better friend than a dog I once had. Nearly did me in to lose him. Don't think I've ever been loved as much.......before or since Rodin loved me!

PUPPY SIZE

This is one of the neatest stories I've ever heard. You will know

Precisely what this little girl is talking about at the end...(you'll want

To share this one with your loved ones and special friends)!

"Danielle keeps repeating it over and over again. We've been back to

This animal shelter at least five times. It has been weeks now since we

Started all of this,"the mother told the volunteer.

"What is it she keeps asking for? "the volunteer asked.

"Puppy size!" replied the mother.

"Well, we have plenty of puppies, if that's what she's looking for."

"I know...we have seen most of them," the mom said in frustration...

Just then Danielle came walking into the office "Well, did you find one?"

Asked her mom. "No, not this time," Danielle said with sadness in her voice. "Can we come back on the weekend?"

The two women looked at each other, shook their heads and laughed.

"You never know when we will get more dogs. Unfortunately, there's

Always a supply," the volunteer said.

Danielle took her mother by the hand and headed to the door.

"Don't worry, I'll find one this weekend," she said.

Over the next few days both mom and dad had long conversations with

Her. They both felt she was being too particular. "It's this weekend or

We're not looking anymore," Dad finally said in frustration.

"We don't want to hear anything more about puppy size either," Mom

Added.

Sure enough, they were the first ones in the shelter on Saturday morning.

By now Danielle knew her way around, so she ran right for the

Section that housed the smaller dogs.

Tired of the routine, mom sat in the small waiting room at the end of

The first row of cages. There was an observation window so you could see

The animals during times when visitors weren't permitted.

Danielle walked slowly from cage to cage, kneeling periodically to take

A closer look. One by one the dogs were brought out and she held each

One...One by one she said, "Sorry, you're not the one."

It was the last cage on this last day in search of the perfect pup.

The volunteer opened the cage door and the child carefully picked up

The dog and held it closely. This time she took a little longer.

"Mom, that's it! I found the right puppy! He's the one! I know it!"

She screamed with joy. "It's the puppysize!"

"But it's the same size as all the other puppies you held over the

Last few weeks," Mom said.

"No not size ---- the sighs. When I held him in my arms, he

Sighed," she said.

"Don't you remember? When I asked you one day what love is, you

Told me love depends on the sighs of your heart.

The more you love, the bigger the sigh!"

The two women looked at each other for a moment. Mom didn't know

Whether to laugh or cry. As she stooped down to hug the child, she did a

Little of both.

"Mom, every time you hold me, I sigh. When you and Daddy come home

From work and hug each other, you both sigh.

I knew I would find the right puppy if it sighed when I held it in my arms,

" she said.

Then holding the puppy up close to her face she said, "Mom, he loves me.

I heard the sighs of his heart!"

Close your eyes for a moment and think about the love that makes you Sigh.

I not only find it in the arms of my loved ones, but in the caress of a Sunset, the kiss of the moonlight and the gentle brush of cool air on a Hot day.

They are the sighs of God.

Take the time to stop and listen; you will

Be surprised at what you hear.

"Life is not measured by the breaths we take,

But by the moments that take our breath away."

Rainbow and all my PCers,

The further I read in this contest, the deeper my heart is touched. You all most certainly are my dear gentle-hearted friends -- the best group of people I may have ever encountered as a group!

Our dog had 5 puppies so my dad decided to give my sister a puppy for her new house. As that puppy got older and wiser he was not only a member of her family ,but also her best friend. So when it was time to relieve him from pain and suffering due to old age...she took it very very hard. Well I had a picture of her dog and decided to get it attached to this poem which she still has framed and hanging in her living room.

Im sure the most of you know it but this is it.....

DOGS DON'T HAVE SOULS, DO THEY?

I remember bringing you home. You were so small and cuddly with your tiny paws and soft fur. You bounced around the room with eyes flashing and ears flopping. Once in a while, you'd let out a little yelp just to let me know this was your territory.

Making a mess of the house and chewing on everything in sight became a passion and when I scolded you, you just put your head down and looked up at me with those innocent eyes as if to say: "I'm sorry, but I'll do it again as soon as you're not watching."

As you got older, you protected me by looking out the window and barking at everyone who walked by. When I had a tough day at work, you would be waiting for me with your tail wagging just to say, "Welcome home. I missed you." You never had a bad day and I could always count on you to be there for me.

When I sat down to read the paper and watch TV, you would hop on my lap looking for attention. You never asked for anything more than to have me pat your head so you could go to sleep with your head over my leg.

As you got older, you moved around more slowly. Then one day, old age finally took its toll, and you couldn't stand on those wobbly legs anymore. I knelt down and patted you lying there, trying to make you young again. You just looked up at me as if to say you were old and tired and that after all these years of not asking for anything, you had to ask me to do one last favor.

With tears in my eyes, I drove you one last time to the vet. One last time you were lying next to me. For some strange reason you were able to stand up in the animal hospital - perhaps it was your sense of pride.

As the vet led you away, you stopped for an instant, turned your head and looked at me as if to say: "Thank you for taking care of me."

I thought, "No - thank YOU for taking care of ME."

oh my goodness mojojds that now really made me cry,my dog once had a litter of puppies and the smallest one kept crying alot and the mama wouldnt feed him so kept making her feed him away from all the other puppies.then one day he cried all day i couldnt figure out what was wrong then the next day i went to check and he wasnt crying anymore so i picked him up and he had a huge lump on his tiny belly,so i rushed him to the vet and the vet said he had a hernia and that lump on his belly was his internal organs.the poor baby he didnt have a chance they said i need to put him to sleep it was sooo sad.so i sat there and petted him before they came with his shot and i cried the whole time.poor baby i hope i never have to do that again i cant even get thru half of that poem without crying.but it is such a beautifull poem!!!

OK, I finally broke down and read all the answers in this thread and I guess I'm prepared submit my own now... I wasn't going to get in on this one, because as soon as I saw what it was about, I just decided to read something else for the moment, and then couldn't bring myself to come back to it til now... 'cause the day I started to read this the first time was the day I found one of our little dogs outside on the street, hit by a car... laying there all by himself... it just broke my heart to see him all alone. It was obvious we weren't going to have to hurry him to the vet... I just went back to get my boyfriend and we retrieved him and buried him in the backyard.
I knew it was gonna be almost impossible to even write this...I was right.
If he was gonna have to die anyway, I just wished I could have been there with him, or wish someone could have been, instead of him being all alone, and it was a stormy night when it happened and that makes it seem even worse for him. I found him the next day, when I went looking for him after he'd stayed out all nite in the storm, which he would normally never do. It wasn't very cold, but it was thundering and lightning, and I knew something was wrong.
Anyway, so I just kept avoiding this thread, but I guess I'm in it now.

We have 3 other dogs still... 2 little ones who stay inside like the one who died did, and then one big dog who stays outside. They're all girls. The one we lost was our only boy. It's just so sad - I think about him every time I drive past the place I found him and still can't get over it.

But that doesn't answer the question!
I expect most of us DO have pets, and that most of them are cats or dogs, with a few fish and birds, and probably at least one reptile and one rodent amongst us too. And who knows what else!

One reason I think that is from the personal stories some of us have shared over at CC; I seem to recall a lot of mentions of furry friends.
But another reason is that I sense that many of us here share a lot of the same traits and ways of thinking, even if we are all, I'm sure, quite different from one another also. So just like I'm pretty sure a lot of us (if not all of us) like to gamble and tend to spend a lot of time online, I also feel that most of us are "pet people", who love animals and have at least one living with them, and if they don't, that's probably because they can't for one reason or another, and probably wish they could.
I've never been without a dog yet, and I can't see that I ever will be.

I noticed Poppy, in a previous response, said something about our pets being our "furry therapists", which I quite agree with! Maybe we can call them our "therapets!"

Thank you

I don't know who, in this thread, has made me cry the hardest, but you know somethig, friends? My psychologist sister told me that we NEED to cry like that -- that it helps in a cathartic way and actually makes a big difference in our health. She said holding it in or refusing to think about it can actually lead to strokes and heart attacks.

Just thought I would share that thru my own tears to my tearful and very good friends, for whom I feel so much.

Hi,

I say yes to cats...as you dont have to walk them in the middle of winter and they sleep most of the day and they dont bark Laughing

When cats want a little TLC they come over purr and rub up against you...

So when I want a little TLC I come over here to PC or CC and I get what I need...with the exception of a little rub Laughing

Good Luck,

sisters Smile
