ADVICE for the NOVICE POKER PLAYER

I am not very good at poker. It would be nice if you could maybe have an area for discussing the how to and when to fold.
It might also be nice to have a chat time for discussions on Poker

I've played a hand or two of poker lol, I wish I was really good at it. My biggest problem is when I have a fantastic hand, I can't seem to control by bidding lol. Especially in free rolls where you have so many people over bidding their hands.

One thing about poker that I've always had work for me is I always start naked lol that way ohhhhh I think I might be thinking of a different kind of poker. Embarassed

I think maybe we should have a private freeroll $30.00 to $50.00

as a special invite at other forums (have to become member) to join freeroll

will get members and play poker at the same time lol

then if it works have a weekly freeroll maybe have to have so many cc points to get into freeroll tourneys

Texas Hold'em is played with a standard deck of 52 cards, and no jokers. Yet the texas hold'em rules are quite simple In a casino setting, where the dealer is always the house dealer, a button moves one player clockwise between games to signify who is the dealer for the purpose of betting and seating issues. The player left of the dealer starts with the Small Blind, which is usually half of the lower stake, rounded to the nearest dollar. The next player to the left of the small blind is required to stake the Blind, but may do so from any position.)">Big Blind, which must equal the lower stake limit. If another player joins the game later in the hand, Texas Holdâ€™em rules say that they will have to post the amount of the big blind.

After the blinds have been staked, each player receives his or her down cards, also called the hole cards. Two cards are dealt to each player. Then there is a round of betting. In this round, the bet or raise is the lower limit of the betting structure. The player to the left of the player who placed the big blind begins the betting. Each player has the option to bet, raise, or fold. Betting means that the player bets the same as the previous better, and raising means that the player bets an additional amount, requiring all other players to bet at least that amount as well or to fold. Folding means that the player has decided to drop out of the round. All money in the game is forfeited by players who fold. Depending on the texas hold'em houseâ€™s rules, there is usually a limit of three raises in a round. A player cannot raise twice in a row. The betting is stopped either when players have raised the maximum number of times allowed or when the last player to have raised is betting again, whichever comes first. When all betting is over, the next stage begins, called the Flop.

In the Flop, three cards are dealt upright so that everyone can see them. These cards are a part of everyoneâ€™s hand at this point.

After the Flop, there is a second round of betting. Any player who has not folded can bet, and betting starts with the first active player to the left of the dealer. Players have the options of bet, check, or raise. Check means that the player adds no additional bet to the pot, but remains in the round. If players after him bet or raise, then a player who has checked must follow the bets and raises. In this round, the bet or raise is the lower limit of the betting structure. Once someone has betted or raised, check is not an option for subsequent players; players may only bet, raise, or fold.

After the second round of betting, a fourth card is placed face-up next to the flop. This stage is called the Turn. The third round of betting is like the second, but in limited Texas Holdâ€˜em games, the stakes double. After the third round of betting, a fifth card is placed face-up next to the flop and the turn. This stage is called the River.

Again there is a betting stage, but in this stage, players have an additional option â€“ they can call. Calling means that they match the highest bet before them, and then betting stops, and players either show their cards or muck them. Players will generally muck their cards if they see that someone before them has a better hand. Showing in that case could mean giving opponents valuable information about their texas hold'em strategies, while it presents no advantage. The winner gets the pot.

Poker, especially Texas Holdâ€˜em, is generally played for what is called Table Stakes, meaning that players purchase their chips at the beginning of the game and cannot purchase more during the game.

As a result, most online poker rooms have a rule that if a player wishes to continue playing after finishing his or her chips, the player can be declared All-In. After that, future bets are put into a side pot, and the player who is all-in can only win the original pot. If the winner is not eligible for the side pot, the side pot goes to the player with the next best hand.

Players are allowed to bet a total of 4 times, including raises. When the betting is completed, if no one has called, there is a Showdown. As in a call, players can show or muck their hands in the showdown.

Playersâ€™ hands can consist of three, four, or five community cards (If you use five, thatâ€™s called â€œplaying the board.â€) and the cards in your hand, as needed, to make a five-card hand. Winning hands are determined the same way as other forms of poker. If the winning hand is identical, the highest card from the hole (called the kicker) determines the winner. If the hands are fully identical, the pot is split among the tying players. If there is an extra chip, it goes to the winning player to the left of the dealer, whether play is for real money or not. In no-limit or pot-limit Texas Holdâ€˜em, the betting structure is different, but other texas hold'em rules are the same

2. Straight Flush
Any five card sequence in the same suit (ex: 8, 9, 10, J, Q or A, 2, 3, 4, 5 of same suit).
1 Chance in 72,192 hands dealt

3. Four of a Kind
All four cards of the same index (Ex: Q, Q, Q, Q).
1 Chance in 4,164 hands dealt.

4. Full House
Three of a kind combined with a pair (ex: A, A, A, 5, 5).
1 Chance in 693 hands dealt

5. Flush
Any five cards of the same suit, but not in the same sequence.
1 Chance in 508 hands dealt

6. Straight
Five cards in sequence, but not of the same suit.
1 Chance in 254 hands dealt

7. Three of a Kind
Three cards of the same rank.
1 Chance in 46 hands dealt

8. Two Pair
Two separate pairs.
1 Chance in 20 hands dealt

9. Pair
Two cards of the same rank.
1 Chance in 4 hands dealt

10. Highest Card
Highest card in your hand.
1 Chance in 2 hands dealt

TO MAW and ALL OTHERS who posted in response to her ~

Well, I certainly understand all your positions and I think you were all on the same page up until CrazyHorse's post which did not address the issue under discussion, even tho it was a good post, and Dr. Crush's response to CrazyHorse, which seemed to end the posts on the original topic raised by Maw.

So, hopefully without making CrazyHorse feel unappreciated -- because he is (that was a superb effort in explaining Texas Hold'em) -- I would like to get back to the earlier posts here and give my 2 cents about folding in a quick and simple way.

AS SOON AS POSSIBLE is my stock answer to "When should I fold?"

To expand just a little, I would say that as soon as you don't think your hand has a very good chance of winning, even if it is as soon as the cards are dealt, THAT is the time to fold.

And that probably means that you are no0t folding often enough. That you are hanging in there too long in the hope that the cards you need to make a good hand will be dealt. Chances are they will NOT be! So every time you don't fold when you have an opportunity to, means you are throwing away more money for no good reason. If there were a good reason, you would be holding it in your hand!

We all keep learning and one thing I have learned is that the really good poker players fold more often than they play out a hand.

It is always a matter of your own judgement, but if you already have 2 or 3 cards and they don't look very good to you, THAT is the time to fold, in my opinion.
