Part 5 in our multi-part series Crushers

COMMON POKER PLAYING MISTAKES
Mistake #5:
Moving up limits, trying to escape bad beats
This is one of the most common mistakes in poker. People get fed up with the bad beats entailed with playing lower limits, so they play higher limits, thinking it will somehow help them win.
Lower-stakes poker involves a lot of variance because people will play just about everything.
However, with this variance comes higher expected value because your opponents make a lot of mistakes.
I said, your opponents make more MISTAKES in lower stakes poker!
Provided you can take advantage of their mistakes through SKILLED play, the common bad play at lower limits is to your advantage.
If you are losing because of bad luck, then that should even itself out with time. No person is "luckier" than another person in the long run; it all evens out.
If you are unable to defeat the lower-stakes players over time, then it is highly doubtful you will beat the higher-stakes players.
You make money at poker because other people make mistakes. If players are making less mistakes, then you will make less money.
You want people calling your raises with Q 5; it's as simple as that. Sure, they may win sometimes, but you come out much more ahead against people calling you with Q 5 than with K K.
It may make you upset that they will win sometimes, but that's poker.
In Conclusion-
More opportunities to take advantage of when playing lower stakes.

I see this over and over again.... I just try real hard not to be the one making the mistakes... but being human... some of those mistakes are bound to be my own. But when I do see someone make a mistake... I do try to take advantage of it. |

well I am new at this so I am sure I do not bet correctly, but I think the more I play I will get the hang of it. I do not get to the point that I will risk bigger bets for instance, for a crappy hand, just so the cheaper bettor will bet more. Nope wont do that lol, I can loose all by myself, do not need to be foolish just to get someone elses attention of what to bet lol IMO

that makes sense to me!! It also makes me feel a lot better about the last time I tried to move up to higher stakes tables and got creamed!! I was expecting everyone at the higher stakes to play like the lower stakes...I guess I just thought - same website, same players...lol |

Generally true, unless you hit a higher limit table full of Arab shieks. |

I think the only chance I would have is to play with others who will make mistakes because I am sure to make plenty myself. In a higher stakes games I think people whould easily take advantage of my playing. |

Very True Rick, VERY.
But, worth a pondering, to me it is mostly:
WHERE CAN YOU APPLY YOUR LEARNED SKILL, whatever level we each are individually, AND HAVE AN EDGE TO TRY AND MAKE TAKE-HOME MONEY?
I, personally, and absolutely honestly admit...
I forget every time that is WHY we are supposed to be playing.... TO WIN MONEY- Not the hand...
I am smart, yet still in Poker.... "Why do I always forget that, and get caught up with the moment to moment, play by play, hand by hand emotion?"
I wish I could re-learn and better yet learn to refrain from emotion in play... |

LOL at win4maw.... awww c'mon give up your secrets!!!
If I find I am getting creamed at a table too much it is time for me to move as I am mostly out of my league there.
If I am consistantly winning then I am in the group level I need to be - just a little better than they. That's the way I look at it LOL
This is true whether the bets are small or big.
Know when to fold them ..... know when to walk away |

I only play in tournaments, that's what i like.so i don't know if the above applys to me.but like in the tournaments here a poker crush i will play almost every hand when the bet is low, until someone bets and if it's low i might stay in longer.I don't believe that it all equals out...Lmao.some people are just lucky or smarter players.and i ditto what patti said......
I, personally, and absolutely honestly admit...
I forget every time that is WHY we are supposed to be playing.... TO WIN MONEY- Not the hand...
thank you and good luck everyone |
